DAY 6 – LOVING HUSBANDS PROVIDE EMOTIONALLY

But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

1 Timothy 5:8, ESV

Lastly, a loving husband should seek to lead his wife spiritually by helping her grow in her relationship with Jesus Christ above all. Christ’s love is perfect. The husband’s love is imperfect. Jesus is the Savior; the husband is the imitator (Ephesians 5:1).

The Husband’s goal is to have his wife depend on Jesus, worship Jesus, love Jesus far more than she would or should love him. Why? Because he can’t give her what her soul needs most!

If she looks to him as her savior, she will not stay satisfied! If she idolizes him initially, she will later demonize him later. God never created the man to meet all the needs of his wife. Nor did he create the wife to complete the man. Each person is complete in Christ, a spouse is gift from God to compliment, and comfort one another so that together you may grow a Godly family and legacy for his glory!

As a husband you will need to provide opportunities for you to grow individually and as a couple in your faith and marriage.  This means setting an example by getting into God’s word and participating in local church as well. You will want to worship together and pray together.

Leslie and I pray and read in God’s word most mornings. It’s the best thing I’ve done to provide for our marriage spiritually, by simply providing a time where we can get into God’s word and pray together for 10-20 minutes a day!

It’s important that you not only grow together but you both grow in your personal relationship with Christ with one on one time with God as well. As a husband, I encourage my wife to get away from time to time for a retreat to spend time in prayer and meditation. She often likes to go to a nice area to hike and enjoy God’s creation. Every time she returns from these trips her soul is renewed and she’s got so much to share about the things she’s spent time thinking about and praying about. By financially investing into retreats like this for our wives, we as husbands are investing into their spiritual growth.

Not everyone grows the same. In his book Sacred Pathways, Gary Thomas reveals there are many pathways in which people grow in their relationship with Christ.

To assume that we all grow the same way would be not considering the uniqueness of learning styles God has interwoven into people’s lives. While some may experience God on a hike, others may not. While others feel God’s presence in serving others, many would rather read the Bible.

While many would say they love to sing, others would hate to. The goal is not uniformity but unity. We all need to be united as Christians to grow in a relationship with Christ, and as husbands we must seek to provide spiritually for our wives by making provisions for this. If it’s time, books, conferences, retreats, church services, small groups, or whatever it takes to help your spouse connect and grow in her relationship with Christ, that’s what you do!  As the two of you grower closer to Christ, you will grow closer together!

Jesus Is Our Example as The Perfect Provider

Jesus was the greatest example as a provider. Paul said that Jesus gave himself up for the church and furthered this idea by saying that Christ said to nourish and cherish the church. That’s to care for it with careful consideration. In the Gospels, we see that Jesus shared about how we are to rely on God for our daily needs in Matthew 6:

“Do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on . . . Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they . . . Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin…”

In this passage, he shares how God knows every little detail and is concerned and cares for all of his creation from the little birds you see on your walks or outside your windows, to the flowers in the fields. They all are his concern, and he provides for them. He values you oh so much more! You are at the top of his creation, making you above all living things. If he provides for them, how much more will he provide for you? God will meet your daily needs, not your daily greeds. He will give you what need, though not necessarily what you want.

Additionally, he provides in giving you what you needed spiritually to live. You needed forgiveness of sin; that is, you needed a debt paid that you couldn’t pay, you needed a burden lifted that you couldn’t carry, you needed a fresh start, and God offered you that at the cross. He died so that you could live. He not only canceled your sins, but he credited you with his righteousness. In believing in him, he justified you, declared you righteous before God for the work he’s deposited in your life. He’s not only provided cancelation of debts, but he’s filled your accounts with his righteousness so that you have more than you need, and in his resurrection, he offers you a power to overcome sins and live a new life more powerful than you ever could live in your own strength!
