DAY 3: PRAY FOR BLESSINGS SO THAT…

May God be gracious to us and bless us and may his face shine upon us…

Psalm 67:1

If you have been in church awhile, you may have heard that phrase. While this is a great encouraging prayer or closing benediction, it’s not a complete truth. You can’t know the purpose of the blessing without reading and believing the tail end of the phrase. It’s found in the next verse of Psalms 67: ”So that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations.”

In other words, God doesn’t bless us for no reason. He blesses for a purpose. The prayer we should be praying is something like this:

“God bless me, so that I can bless others. I want people to come to faith in Christ; I want to be a blessing, so they see you as the giver of all blessing. I don’t want blessings just for me, but for others. Bless all believers so that the world will be blessed, that there may be salvation among every people, tribe, tongue, and nation.”

Now, I know that’s likely not quite your thoughts, but you need to be thinking things like: how has God blessed me? Why has God blessed me? If you know Jesus you have the blessing of eternal life; that’s an eternal blessing!  Here we learn that we should be asking God to bless us so that we might be a blessing to others, specifically among the unbelievers, so that they may come to faith in Christ and experience salvation.

Ask God today to bless, so that his ways might be known everywhere you go. God doesn’t want to block his blessings. Don’t build a dam, don’t block them. They will continue to flow to you as they flow through you. You are God’s chosen vessel to receive and give blessings. So pray for blessings, so that you can bless someone today, so that he might be known more and more around our world.
