Day 35: Our Spiritual Resurrection

We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4

Jesus’ resurrection shows us what the resurrection of our physical bodies will be like. It also shows us what our spiritual resurrection is like.

According to Romans 6, those who know Christ have died to sin. Before being united to Christ, everyone lives a life of sin. Repenting and thus being baptized as part of Christ’s church represents dying to that old life and being raised into a new sinless life by the power of God. Just like Jesus died to one life and was raised by the power of God to a new eternal life.

This new life means the Christian is dead to sin - he or she can never live a life of sin again. Christians do still sin, as we know, but because of their love for God, Christians are always repenting and seeking to follow God. Romans 6:10 says, “the life he lives he lives to God.” Instead of following sinful impulses, a Christian lives for God.

Jesus is the pattern we follow. We will be resurrected with bodies like His. We die to our old lives and begin a new one like He died and rose again. We are resurrected spiritually in order to live a life of holiness, and, again, our example is Jesus. Being holy means being like Jesus.

Questions for reflection and discussion

  • What have you had to give up or leave behind in order to live to God?
  • How do you still need to become more like Jesus?

Prayer
Dear God, You give us new life in Christ. Help us become more like Him every day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
