Day 3 – Jesus chose and appointed his disciples to go.

John 15:16, ESV

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide…

As Christians we are to join in this call of Jesus disciples by going! Going into acts of service and ministry. Jesus uses terms like “Chosen” to refer to salvation and “Appointed” to refer to ideas such as commission. The meaning of “appointed” is the Greek verb “tithmi”, which means to set, to establish, to fix, to ordain. In other words, God has set and ordained that you go! This idea is a preview of the Great Commission. In Matthew 28:18–20, Jesus says… “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” When Jesus says, “...appointed you that you should go and bear fruit...”, we should understand this fruit as righteousness, holiness, living a good and godly life in every way; but we must also think of this fruit as winning others to Christ and building up God’s kingdom. For in the appointment and calling even in the nation of Israel, it was unto a responsibility and purpose (Psalms 67, Genesis 12:1-3). They were appointed to be a light to all other nations; they were blessed in order to be a blessing. In the same way, God is doing what God has always done, calling them to go and declare and demonstrate his righteousness throughout the world.
