Light is Truth

“If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” 1 John 1:6-7

Have you ever heard the phrase, “She talks the talk but doesn’t walk the walk”? This means that someone’s actions aren’t lining up with what she claims to believe. This is very similar to how John refers to the illustration of light in vs. 7.
Light often symbolizes the truth in the bible. “Truth” is another nickname for Jesus Christ. In the book of John, also written by the author of I John, Jesus Himself said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. Nobody comes to the Father except through me” (14:6). This is the good news: that Jesus is the very truth we need to believe in order to enter into a relationship with God.
So when we need to figure out which way to go to live a life pleasing to God, Jesus Himself helps us see the truth. Believing in Jesus lights a way, like a path being lit up by a lamp in the dead of night. However, it’s one thing to be able to finally see the path once it has been revealed by truth and light, but it’s another thing entirely to actually walk along that path.
This means that we are not just talking the talk as Christians, but our faith in Truth leads us to walk the walk in every area of our life. How has God lit up your path so that you may walk in it? How might God be guiding you to live out truth in your own life? Maybe it has something to do with how you use your words, your decisions and your actions every single day!

Questions for reflection and discussion
1. How has God lit up your path so that you may walk in it?
2. How might God be guiding you to live out truth in your own life?

Dear God, we thank You that the nature of Jesus lights up our way in this dark world. We pray that You would give us the strength to actually walk in truth every single day once we know which way to go! We pray that our relationship with Jesus would continue to give us clarity and direction to bring glory to Your name when we feel lost and defeated. Amen.
