What Is Intersectionality?

DAY 4 | What Is Intersectionality?

In creating the BLM movement, I do have to say they use a wide vocabulary that will challenge the average reader to grab a dictionary. There are many educated people in their movement, from pastors, to street preachers, to professors, to politicians. There is an organized effort to use a common language.

We should know that words matter. Ideas matter. These words are loaded with ideas that can bring about powerful change in culture. One of the words that is being used in the BLM movement and within the broader conversation regarding cultural Marxism is “Intersectionality”.

THE DEFINITION OF INTERSECTIONALITY

Intersectionality is defined by Oxford Dictionary as the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage.

THE DANGER OF INTERSECTIONALITY

So, for example, if you’re a female, that’s one area you will be discriminated against in your life. If you’re not white, there’s another area in your life. And where the female and non-white meet you have an intersection, which means you are likely to have significant disadvantages and will be discriminated against.

Intersectionality propagates to the masses of the movement what is known as a victim mentality. This mentality puts people in bondage to past pains and experiences. People with this mentality see themselves as victims, and therefore they act like victims. Victims are weak and oppressed. While our American history can’t deny the evils of slavery and the prejudice in the past, there are many opportunities for Blacks and minorities in this country today, and some would argue even more than the white majority, with policies such as Affirmative Action and such that provide open doors that they might not otherwise have had.

It’s important for the Christian to find their identity from the Scriptures, not society: to look to Christ, not culture, to look at the Bible, not to Bologna. The Bible clearly teaches the identity of the believer, that regardless of color or race, in Christ we are new creations! (2 Cor. 5:17) Every Christian is in fact given every spiritual blessing! (Eph.1:3) In Christ, there ought not to be any racial division (Gal 3:28). In Christ we are given the victory! (2 Cor. 15:57) This must never be forgotten! Many Black preachers have boldly proclaimed a correct understanding of their victory in Christ, with God as their ultimate deliverer. Like the Israelites and Moses, God is more than able to part the Red Sea; he alone holds the power and calls his people to walk by faith, to claim the promises and walk in victory.

As Christians we can’t let terms such as intersectionality divide us, and lower our minds to such thinking that diminishes the very words of scripture: “For we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength.” (Philippians 3:14)

Tomorrow, I will write about what Black Lives Matter actually believes.
