This month, we are so excited to share encouragement about how serving and the Thursday Night experience has impacted our community. We are pleased for you to meet Steve & Lorraine Smith.

They say, "We had been praying for God to bring us to a thriving church ready and willing to reach the community for Christ, and He led us to North Valley just over a year ago! Gather, Grow, and Go spoke to us, and we immediately felt connected. Pastor Ryan and the Holy Spirit convicted us to get more serious about our giving and tithing, and we have faithfully trust God to provide."

Lorraine further asserts, " Being part of the Guest Services team has reminded me of the importance of showing God’s love to others, especially those who are new. I have enjoyed welcoming people to the church and helping to make it warm and inviting. My husband, Steve, helps with security and takes the responsibility of keeping those children safe while on campus.  In both cases, we are grateful God can use us at North Valley. North Valley isn’t your typical church or campus.

Right away, we liked how authentic Pastor Ryan is and how direct, open, and available he is to the church. The campus is unique because it offers such beauty and areas to eat, play, and connect. When Thursday night services started, we were on board to help from the get-go. Why? Selfishly, we loved the ability to go adventuring over the weekend and remain involved in our church. We also believe in reaching those who work or cannot attend Sunday. What a blessing all around!

I have always believed we are supposed to use our God-given talents to build God’s Kingdom. North Valley has something for everyone and couldn’t do it without the help of volunteers. What an honor to be apart of a growing church reaching the North Valley. As a volunteer, you know you are making a difference in this dark world."

The Lord is at work at North Valley, and we are so thankful that He continues to show his faithfulness.

How Worship Arts & the North Valley Community Empower Ethan https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/how-worship-arts---the-north-valley-community-empower-ethan https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/how-worship-arts---the-north-valley-community-empower-ethan#comments Thu, 28 Dec 2023 16:00:00 -0800 https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/how-worship-arts---the-north-valley-community-empower-ethan Ethan is an individual who goes beyond the call of duty and does all he can to use his gifting to glorify God. He has not only been impacted by North Valley, he has positively impacted the church environment through his engaging spirit. Ethan clearly follows the directive of the Lord and uses that as he leads others on the worship team. Here is more of Ethan’s story.

When asked “How has the Lord used North Valley to help you grow in your faith?”, he responded by saying, “When the COVID-19 Pandemic started I had been balancing full time work, in the restaurant industry, with worship ministry. I made the decision to take a step back from ministry and threw my full focus on managing my restaurant and my staff. When I had parted ways with the restaurant business I had already pushed myself away from active church presence, both in community and in ministry. I had first heard of North Valley a bit over a year ago when I was asked to fill in on a Sunday to serve alongside the worship team. As I continued to serve a bit more, I would sit in on the services themselves as I had neglected my spiritual growth for almost the entire two years of the pandemic. My wife and I were looking to get back into a regular rhythm of church attendance and service, as we both left jobs that stretched us too thin. Pastor Ryan definitely secured my interest in this church, especially his unwillingness to re-write the scriptures to make the Gospel palatable for a world that is spiritually starved. However, it was the community groups that made the impact for my wife. The MacGregors were so intentional about taking care of my wife, who was struggling heavily with allergies, and this meant the world to her and I. Through this, God has used the people in this church to help draw myself and my wife closer to Him. I am hopeful and trusting that God will continue to use Pastor Ryan, the MacGregors, and the worship team to continue sanctifying me so that I can glorify Him in my marriage and in my hope to one day be a father."

When posed with,, “You are a huge asset to our worship team, how has being a part of that changed you or helped you grow in your faith?”, Ethan stated “Worship ministry has always been the most important aspect of my faith. In 1 Corinthians 12 the Apostle Paul writes about Spiritual Gifts and the Unity/Diversity of the Body of Christ. His message expresses that God designs us as a community of believers the same way he designed the beauty of our bodies. Each part having a singular purpose and function that provides a benefit to the rest of the body; an ear is designed to help one hear, I have been designed to use my skills and talents to help foster and facilitate congregational worship. I have been given the responsibility and honor of leading the worship team in a morning devotional and communion every Sunday morning. This has definitely been a challenge of balance, between providing the utmost respect and care through for the Eucharist and guiding us as a worship ministry for how the Gospel impacts what we get to do for this church. Jonathan has done an amazing job leading this worship team musically, I only hope to be as efficient in guiding the hearts of this team towards the right posture for worship. My prayer is that each week as we put prayers into melodies that God would soften people's hearts to receive His truth, His love, and His Holiness that we know brings life change whether or not it happens that day or in 10 years."

When asked, “What do you love about North Valley?”, he answered by saying, “ I would be lying if I did not say that the greatest thing for me is the ability to use my craft of drumming on a weekly basis. It's the one area of my life where I feel the most intimate with God, where I can be refilled if I am spiritually exhausted, and where I can feel empowered when I am weak. I love the worship team and the people who I get to serve alongside each as we experience both the challenges and triumphs of this ministry. I do love the value that my wife and I get from community groups and the relationships that we have built that have been so monumental as I have been battling a lot of fear due to my father being diagnosed with brain cancer earlier this year. I am also grateful for Pastor Ryan and his wife Leslie for the support they have shown my wife and I, alongside the opportunities Pastor Ryan has entrusted me with.”

Lastly, we asked Ethan to  “ Share anything else you feel others would benefit from as far as how the Lord is using North Valley to work through you.” He said, “ As a worship minister I cannot express enough that we have an extremely unique opportunity every day that we draw breath on this earth. We will only have the opportunity to provide God with worship that is laced with our pain, our doubts, our fears, our worries, and our battles on this side of Heaven. We know Christ's power is perfect in our weakness and we are encouraged to be content and glad through these worldly pains because our weakness is where Christ strengthens us (2 Corinthians 12:9-10). One worship song that I really enjoy is "Firm Foundation," by Cody Carnes, and the second verse captures this beautifully. "I've still got joy in chaos, I've got peace that makes no sense, I won't be going under, I'm not held by my own strength." For as long as we reside on this side of eternity we should pour out our praise in response to God's merciful gift of eternal life through our faith in Jesus Christ.”

Ethan shared so many wise and moving words through the testimony of his experience with North Valley. It is our hope that you are encouraged and empowered by this story. It is our belief that God can move just as mightily in you, using the gifts and talents He has blessed you with.

How Baptisms are Strengthening Relationships https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/baptism_2 https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/baptism_2#comments Tue, 21 Nov 2023 20:00:00 -0800 https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/baptism_2 Jesus is so evidently working in and through our church. This month, we are so excited to share an encouraging story about how baptisms have impacted a wonderful couple at North Valley. We are pleased for you to meet Amy & Chad Plain.

Chad writes “Being baptized to me means that I have fully accepted the Lord as my Savior and there is something bigger and better for me. Baptism has changed my marriage completely.  It has made me appreciate and respect my wife more than I ever have.  I'm more attentive, patient, & loving.  It's hard to explain because I don't have to think about those things like I did in the past, it just comes naturally.”

He states “For me I'm actually reading versus of the Bible which I would have never done before.  My wife and I recently took a vacation to Hawaii.  It was a 6 hour flight and to pass the time we played Bible Trivia.  I was surprised by how well I did.  This would have never happened prior to me accepting God as my Savior.  I have a long way to go but I'm excited for the Journey.”

Chad encourages others by saying “If you are on the Fence with Baptism, that means you're almost there and thinking about it.  My advice would be take the leap and fully engulf yourself in the word of God.  It will change your life in the best possible way.  For me my marriage has improved and my professional life has improved immensely.  It will do the same for anyone who accepts the Lord as their Savior.”

His wife, Amy, says “Although I was baptized as a young child and have always felt like a child of God,  I felt I wanted to be fully submerged and baptized at my own free will to symbolize my recognition that I am new, and publicly wash away my sins and profess my faith in Christ.  It was such a blessing to be baptized with my husband who is on a newer journey with his Christian life.  I have loved him since I can remember, but God was not at the center of our marriage and we were missing so much that we didn't even know.”

“We both decided we need to put Christ first in our lives and it has made our marriage stronger in every way.”  He has become a happier, more relaxed and understanding person.  I have become more at peace with things in the world that I have no control over.  I think individually I have grown in my faith substantially since being baptized.  I want to do better and continually learn as much as I can about God's word and teachings.  There are many reasons I believe baptism is such an important step in our spiritual journey with God, most notably to me has been that it's a constant reminder that I need to always surrender myself and my  life to Jesus Christ.”

The Lord is at work in our Church and we are so thankful that He continues to show his faithfulness here at North Valley. When you give, you're fueling and funding ministries that touch the lives of people and bring them closer to Christ.

Jesus is Using North Valley to Connect People https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/jesus-is-using-north-valley-to-connect-people https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/jesus-is-using-north-valley-to-connect-people#comments Fri, 20 Oct 2023 09:00:00 -0700 https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/jesus-is-using-north-valley-to-connect-people Jesus is so evidently working in and through our church. This month, we are so excited to share an encouraging story about how the ministries at North Valley have impacted the life of a wonderful young woman in our church. We are pleased for you to meet, Kassidi Carroll.

Kassidi writes “I found North Valley at a time in my life where I was in desperate need of a Christian community and a place to grow in my faith. I had attended one service before Christmas of 2022 and felt at home in the church. I wasn’t able to attend the church again until February 2023. I went to the Women’s Craft Event without knowing a soul and felt so incredibly welcomed into the church. I knew people knew I was a new face, but I was treated like I belonged. I’ve been faithfully attending North Valley ever since then and it has had nothing but a positive impact on my life.”

She explains that “North Valley has given me numerous opportunities to grow in my faith. One way is through the women’s bible study. I am blessed to be in a group with women who have so much more wisdom than myself. Being involved in the young adults community group has given me wonderful Christian friends to lean into and do life with.”

“I have also been blessed to serve in both our kids ministry and junior high ministry. In the kids ministry, I teach 3rd-5th grade. God has used this position to push me in my faith to understand scripture in a way that children will understand it, as well. In junior high, I had the opportunity to go to UCYC summer camp this year. UCYC opened up conversations and opportunities for us as leaders to express our desire for these kids to know God more and how we can do that in our everyday lives. There is something that changes in your heart when you teach the next generation about the love of Christ. I can say without a doubt my faith has been strengthened through my roles with the Next Generation Team. God has deepened my understanding of who He is and the importance of teaching these kids about Him. Watching the kids grow in their love and understanding of Christ has only helped to grow mine as well.”

“Serving makes an impact in the church, the community, and in your own life. God uses service to grow us and push the boundaries of what we think we can do. Honestly, I never thought I could teach kids. But God created a role that needed to be filled in the kid's ministry and placed it on my heart to step into that role. Through His faithfulness, I have grown so much in my faith. God uses people who are under-qualified to do His work all the time”

The Lord is at work in our Church and we are so thankful that He continues to show his faithfulness here at North Valley. When you give, you're fueling and funding ministries that touch the lives of people and bring them closer to Christ.

Making An Impact In the Next Generation https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/making-an-impact-in-the-next-generation https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/making-an-impact-in-the-next-generation#comments Tue, 17 Oct 2023 14:00:00 -0700 https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/making-an-impact-in-the-next-generation Jesus is using our church to work in and through the lives of the Next Generation. This month, we are so excited to share an encouraging story about two high school students who are a part of our Guides Program.
We are pleased for you to meet, Kaley and Landon.

Our Guides Program is designed to have students assist in guiding other children and youth on their spiritual journey to grow in a relationship with Jesus and his church. They serve on Sunday mornings alongside an adult teacher. This past Sunday, Kaley and Landon taught our PreK classroom for the very first time solo and are the first Guides to have ever done it!

Valerie Robertson, our NV Kids Coordinator, explains that "Kaley and Landon have taken on a remarkable role within NV Kids, transitioning from assistants helping the teacher, leading in activities and prayer, to confident and capable teachers for our PreK class. Their journey demonstrates their commitment to sharing and showing the love of Jesus to the Next Generation. Over time, their dedication and enthusiasm set them apart, allowing them to assume more responsibility and leadership within NV Kids. Through their commitment, they have become shining examples of what it means to follow Jesus! Kaley and Landon have become valuable role models for NV Kids. We are so proud of them!"

Kaley states "I love serving because I have the chance to build relationships with these kids and show them how to love like Jesus. I love pouring into their lives and watching how they affect my life. Serving is not just an opportunity for me to work in the lives of others, but for God to work in mine."

Landon adds that "I enjoy the little kids and being able to make relationships with them. I love how they open up and are excited to be at church each and every week. I love how God is moving through the ministry at this church and that I have the chance to be a part of it."

Jesus is using our Next Generation and working through them to reach all ages. We are thankful that the Lord continues to show his faithfulness here at North Valley. When you give, you're fueling and funding ministries, such as our Guides Program.

3 Simple Ways to Prepare Your Heart and Home for Easter https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/3-simple-ways-to-prepare-your-hearts-and-home-for-easter https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/3-simple-ways-to-prepare-your-hearts-and-home-for-easter#comments Tue, 04 Apr 2023 14:00:00 -0700 https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/3-simple-ways-to-prepare-your-hearts-and-home-for-easter 3 SIMPLE WAYS TO PREPARE

YOUR HEART AND HOME THIS EASTER

Preparing for Easter can help you experience the most out of this special day. For the last two thousand years, Christians have considered resurrection Sunday the crucial event that solidified their faith in Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul said, "If Christ had not been raised from the dead, then all of our preaching and faith would be in vain." (I Cor. 15:14). If we want to get the most out of Easter, we must first understand it's meaning and then seek to be intentional to experience it. Here are three simple ways your family can prepare for Easter.

1. Set aside time for God’s Word.

God's word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. (Ps. 119:105 ) In this journey of life, you need God's word, God's spirit, and God's people. Let's start with God's Word. It's never too late to open your Bible. You can look to any of the gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and find the account of the crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Choose a time and place within your home where you can get away to get together. Get away from the distractions of cell phones and TV. Please turn off the laptop, sit down, perhaps with a nice cup of coffee, and tell the kids we will do a devotional for the next 15 to 20 minutes. On Good Friday, our Lord was crucified. On Easter Sunday, our Lord was raised from the dead. You could pick some appropriate passages for your kids and family to read or read them yourself as a father or mother. Be sure to go slow and explain a few things along the way if need be. Leave time for discussion, and be sure to ask probing questions.

2. Set aside time for God’s Spirit.

The Bible tells us to be filled with God's Spirit, sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs among ourselves, and make music to the Lord in our hearts. In doing so, we are fellowshipping and filling ourselves with more of the Holy Spirit's presence in our lives. (Eph. 5:19). As a Christian, you need more of the Holy Spirit. I believe God's spirit dwells with you richly as you worship Jesus. (Col. 3:16) You may want to listen to some old hymns. Many of those songs are filled with profound theological truths that center around the cross of Christ and the empty tomb. Maybe you want to listen to some of the modern worship songs too? Choose some of your favorites, and listen and sing in the car with your kids. Talk about the lyrics within the songs and the meaning they hold in your heart. You may want a journal about God's love and grace that you've experienced due to Jesus' great sacrifice for your sins. It's vital to warm the heart up before entering church services, if possible. You can do this by listening to worship music and preparing your heart and mind before a Good Friday church service or Easter service.

3. Set aside time to be with God’s People.

The Bible tells us not to give up meeting together as some people are in the habit of doing. (Heb. 12:2) Easter services tend to draw more people than any other church service in the calendar year. It’s a tremendous opportunity for you and your family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors to all set aside your differences and worship Jesus Christ. There's no more extraordinary place to find God's grace and truth than a local church that preaches the Bible and exalts Jesus Christ as Lord. Good Friday service should highlight the death of Jesus Christ and it's meaning. In contrast, Easter Sunday should highlight the resurrection of Jesus Christ and its implications for all people.

Making an Impact in Marriages https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/making-an-impact-in-marriages https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/making-an-impact-in-marriages#comments Thu, 20 Oct 2022 11:00:00 -0700 https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/making-an-impact-in-marriages North Valley Family & Friends,

I want to share another encouraging story of a couple within our church, Julie and Joe. This couple has been attending North Valley over the past few years, and recently, Julie has noticed a shift in her husband.

Joe would occasionally attend services, but would primarily attend with Julie on big event days or holiday weekends. One weekend he overheard people talking about the Weekend to Remember marriage conference and decided he would surprise Julie and register them. Julie will be the first to tell you that God has changed their marriage through North Valley and that conference. Joe now asks what time they're going to church, attends community group, and is quick to jump in to help wherever needed at church.

Julie said, "It is everything a wife would want is to have your husband spiritually lead, but I had to stop trying to change him. It had to be God's hands on our marriage. Don't ever give up on your marriage! Literally, let go and let God do His magic."

You are making an impact in marriages, ministries, and missions at North Valley.

To Christ be the glory in the North Valley,

Pastor Ryan Rice

The Husband and Spiritual Leadership https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/the-husband-and-spiritual-leadership https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/the-husband-and-spiritual-leadership#comments Sat, 27 Aug 2022 04:00:00 -0700 https://www.northvalley.org/blog/post/the-husband-and-spiritual-leadership

But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

1 Timothy 5:8, ESV

Lastly, a loving husband should seek to lead his wife spiritually by helping her grow in her relationship with Jesus Christ above all.

Christ’s love is perfect.  The husband’s love is imperfect.  Jesus is the Savior; the husband is the imitator (Ephesians 5:1).

The Husband’s goal is to have his wife depend on Jesus, worship Jesus, and love Jesus far more than she would or should love him.  Why?  Because he can’t give her what her soul needs most!  He must point her to Jesus Christ or the marriage will be unhealthy.  When a wife seeks God as her first priority, and the husband seeks Christ first, the two will grow closer and closer as they do!

If she looks to her husband as her savior, she will not be satisfied!  If she idolizes him initially, she will demonize him later.  God never created the man to meet all the needs of his wife, nor did he create the wife to meet all the needs of her husband!  Each person should find their fulfillment completely in Christ.

This is what was lacking in the story of the woman at the well (John 4).  She was found as having a revolving door of men in her life, divorced and remarried numerous times.  What was the real problem?  She tried to satisfy her soul with men rather than the one man that could truly satisfy her.  Jesus Christ alone is the true satisfaction that the soul longs for.  If a husband tries to be the savior to his wife, he stunts her growth and starves her spiritually.

As a husband, you will need to help her grow in her faith.  Consider opportunities for her to grow individually, maybe Bible studies with other women or personal devotionals apart from you.  These can help her grow in faith as a woman and as a follower of Jesus Christ.  She is a daughter to Father God and sister in Christ for you.

The Christian husband is called to be head of the marriage and family.  This implies spiritual leadership much like that of how a pastor oversees his congregation, the husband should consider himself the pastor of the home, leading, and serving his little flock, his family, with the heart of a pastor.  Caring to the needs of the family, especially the wife.

This means setting an example by getting into God’s word and participating in a local church.  You will want to worship together, pray together, and serve together.  There perhaps is nothing more special than doing these things together.

Leslie and I pray and read in God’s word most mornings.  It’s the best thing I’ve done to provide for our marriage spiritually by simply providing a time where we can get into God’s word and pray together for 10-20 minutes a day!

It’s important that you not only grow together, but you both grow in your personal relationship with Christ with one-on-one time with God as well.  As a husband, I encourage my wife to get away from time to time for a retreat to spend time in prayer and meditation.  She often likes to go to a nice area to hike and enjoy God’s creation.  Every time she returns from these trips her soul is renewed, and she’s got so much to share about the things she’s spent time thinking about and praying about.  By financially investing into retreats like this for our wives, we are investing into their spiritual growth.  Not everyone grows the same.  In his book Sacred Pathways, Gary Thomas reveals there are many pathways in which people grow in their relationship with Christ.

To assume that we all grow the same way would be not considering the uniqueness of learning styles God has interwoven into people’s lives.  While some may experience God on a hike, others may not.  While others feel God’s presence in serving others, many would rather read the Bible.

While many would say they love to sing, others would hate to.  The goal is not uniformity but unity.  We all need to be united as Christians to grow in a relationship with Christ and each other.

As husbands, we must seek to provide spiritually for our wives by making provisions for this.  If it’s giving her personal time off, away from the house, buying books, attending a marriage conference, retreats, church services, small groups, or whatever it takes to help you and your spouse connect and grow, do that!

Take It Home

  1. Talk about what you enjoy doing as a couple or family to encourage your faith.
  2. Ask your wife how you can better lead the family spiritually.
  3. Ask her how you can better serve her to encourage her personal growth.
