Key Passage
Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
This verse reveals three foundational truths:
- We are created on purpose.
2. We are created with purpose.
3. We are created for a purpose.
Definition of Purpose
Purpose: The reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.
Our purpose isn’t defined by what we do, but by who we are in Christ.
1. Created On Purpose
Genesis 1:27 (ESV)
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”
Psalm 139:13–14 (ESV)
“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
God designed us intentionally—no accidents, no mistakes. Every person bears His image and reflects His character. Even the parts we might not like about ourselves were created with intention by a perfect Creator.
You are fearfully and wonderfully made.
2. Created With Purpose
Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
Our identity is rooted in Christ, not in our career, appearance, or achievements. We are God’s workmanship—His masterpiece—crafted to live out good works.
Examples of good works: Encouraging someone, praying for others, serving in your church or community, helping a friend or neighbor.
Living with purpose means walking daily in love, service, and community.
3. Created For Purpose
Matthew 28:19–20 (ESV)
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Our ultimate purpose is to make disciples and share the love of Jesus. God’s plan for your life always includes pointing others toward Him. We are not alone—Jesus promises to be with us as we live out our purpose.
Challenge
For believers: Invest in the next generation through Time, Talent, and Treasure:
- Time: Serve and mentor others.
• Talent: Use your gifts to bless and build the church.
• Treasure: Give generously to help others grow in their faith.
For seekers: Discover your identity and purpose in Jesus.
Ephesians 2:8–9 (ESV)
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
Talk It Over
- Icebreaker: If you could instantly be amazing at one skill or talent, what would it be—and how would you use it to make a difference?
- What stood out to you most from Ephesians 2:10 and the idea that we are God’s workmanship?
- How does it feel to know that you were intentionally created by God—on purpose, not by accident?
- Why do you think people often try to find their identity in achievements, appearance, or popularity instead of Christ?
- What does it practically look like to live with purpose in your everyday life?
- Think of someone who lives out their purpose well—what makes them stand out?
- How does the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19–20) show what we were created for?
- What’s one “good work” you can walk in this week that would reflect God’s purpose in you?
- How can you use your time, talent, or treasure to impact others for Christ?
- What’s one area of your life where you need to be reminded that you are fearfully and wonderfully made?
