TALK IT OVER

Ice Breaker – What's one of your best memories of your Mom?

1. How did your Mom play a role in your spiritual development?

2. As we read the scriptures, we must remember the context of I Timothy. The Apostle Paul is writing to encourage and exhort his young protégé. Timothy is pastoring the church in Ephesus and needs encouragement. What does Paul tell him to do? Read 2 Timothy 1:1-5 to answer the following few questions.

3. How does Paul describe his relationship with Timothy?

4. What can we assume about Timothy's relationship with his Mother and Grandmother?

5. Where might Timothy’s Father be? (Acts 16:1) The Bible doesn't say much other than he was a Greek. His wife was a Jew. Timothy was biracial and perhaps an absent spiritual leader as a father. Imagine some of those challenges back then.

6. How did the Apostle Paul fill in the gap as a Father? Read and discuss Philippians 2:22, 1 Corinthians 4:17, 2 Timothy 3:14

7. Paul Admired this sincere faith of Timothy and his mother and grandmother. What's he saying towards the end of his letter? Read and discuss 2 Timothy 3:14-15

8. What else can we learn from Timothy's relationship with his Mom? Based on this passage? 2 Timothy 3:14-15

9. How can we grow in the sincerity of faith? Pastor Ryan said. "Sincerity of faith is faith free of duplicity, hypocrisy, fakeness, falseness, and shallowness. It's a deep, genuine, authentic faith. It's free from pretending and performing. It's a faith tested, tried, comforted, and covered by God's grace. It's faith that's figured it out. It's not about pleasing people, it's about resting in God's grace, knowing you are accepted and loved by God for who you are, and this frees you up to be sincere." How sincere is your faith? How can you grow in sincerity?

10. Pastor Ryan gave some practical points to consider. Take a few minutes to review all three and look up the corresponding passages to discuss.

**Note to Leader: Great job, leaders! Talk to your host, and please tell the group the need to start other groups and discuss their willingness with prospective leaders. We will take a break over the summer but would love to have all the leaders back and start new groups too! I will be in touch with the leaders over the summer break.
