In The Twinkling of An Eye

39

In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.

1 Corinthians 15:52, ESV

When I drop off my car for some work I usually ask the mechanic, "How long it will take?" I usually hear a response like “Not long.” I then respond, "How long is “not long"?" “Maybe a few hours.” The mechanic responds. Once I hear that I know what kind of time frame I am looking at.

As believers, it helps to know what kind of time frames we are looking at. While we do not know the day nor the hour when Jesus will return, we do know the rapture will happen in an instant. In Paul’s letter to the church in Corinth, he describes the event as happening in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye.”

The Greek word used for “moment” in the passage is atomos. It’s where we get our word atom. It’s incredibly small, it’s microscopic and it goes unseen by the naked eye. It could be defined in the original sense as something that happens in an extremely short period of time, or being instantaneous, or happening in a flash.

Paul furthers the description of the event by saying it would happen “in the twinkling of an eye.” If this is meant to be taken literally, which we have no good reason as to interpret it any other way, this would mean 1/1000th of a second. The point is clear. The rapture will happen in flash! This will be a global event for believers worldwide. In a moment, ashes from deceased believers will raise, and corpses will rise from the grave and be reunited with new bodies, and living believers all across the world, will be raptured. Jesus will be there to pick them up and take them home. Everything will change in that moment. Millions and millions of believers will have vanished from the face of the earth. Only non-believers will be left behind.

The Apostle Paul and many other new testament writers and other pastors and theologians throughout church history believed that Jesus could return at any time. They were in a sense rapture ready. Are you ready?
